No s needed

I’ll certainly enjoy this “extra” daylight that daylight saving time is bringing this weekend, but what I don’t like is how many people like to add “s” to “saving” when referring to the change. As a former newspaper editor, it was so hard for fellow copy editors to understand that. Imagine the confusion when the AP dropped the hyphen a couple of years ago for daylight saving time. It’s still a modifier isn’t it? I won’t lose sleep over any of this … oh wait, I probably will. :-)

Speaking of adding “s,” I have a big pet peeve with people adding that letter to certain things. That big bookseller? It’s Barnes & Noble. No s. That big grocery store? It’s Kroger. Not Krogers or Kroger’s. Clothing retailer – J.C. Penney. Not Penneys or Penny’s or Pennies. As for those extra apostrophes, that’s another subject for another day …
